Help Barents Observer with a "suitable gift" for Putin’s birthday
Today, October 7th is Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 70th birthday. Although there is nothing to celebrate for the independent press, we in the Barents Observer want to present Vladimir with a gift to remember:
We establish a strong independent newsroom for Russian journalists in exile.
Denis Zagore and Georgii Chentemirov from respectively Murmansk and Petrozavodsk have just arrived to work with the Russian edition of the Barents Observer here in Kirkenes.
Both are experienced journalists with years of work in radio, TV and newspapers. They left their country as repression against free and independent voices reaches an unprecedented level. Both were also at risk of being mobilized to the war in Ukraine.
The Barents Observer is crowdfunding the newsroom for Russian journalists in exile. We need your support more than ever.

PS! Did you know October 7th also marks the founding date of the Independent Barents Observer? Next year marks our 20th anniversary of providing cross-border journalism from the north, in English and Russian languages. We promise that our last year as “teenager” will be spent staying strong on our mission, fighting censorship, in times of unprecedented challenges.
