High North on American election agenda?

Norwegian diplomats are working hard to make contacts with the two American presidential candidates. Norwegian positions in issues concerning the environment, the Arctic and international reconciliation are promoted to the presidential hopefuls.

The Norwegian Government follows the American presidential election campaign closely, in order to establish good contacts with key figures in American politics in the coming four years.

Morten Aasland, who is North America coordinator for the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, says to Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten that competing for the attention with the new president after the election is very difficult. Therefore it is important to establish good relations with both candidates at an early stage.

The Norwegian diplomats emphasize Norway’s abilities in areas such as peace building, conflict resolution, environmental issues and the Arctic.
