Higher unemployment raises concern in Finland
As recession looms, the people of Finland increasingly worry about the situation in the labor market. Unemployment is now a bigger concern for the average Finn that climate change, a new poll concludes.
The poll, conducted by newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, shows that job security now weighs heavier than issues such as combating climate change and cutting taxes, issues which previously topped the people’s priority list for government, Yle News reports. Fighting unemployment now ranks third after two other top priorities: securing basic services and reducing poverty, the Finnish broadcaster reports. After a period of more than 15 percent unemployment in the 1990s, Finnish authorities have managed to bring the unemployment down to below seven percent. That is still higher than in the neighboring Nordic countries of Sweden and Norway.
