HIV stagnates in Murmansk
The number of new cases of HIV infected is dropping.
According to figures from health authorities in Murmansk, the number of new cases in the first half of 2011 is 16,7 percent lower than in the same period in 2010. Also in 2010, the number of new cases dropped. Then, 14,3 percent less cases were revealed compared with 2009, the regional government press service informs.
The positive trend has been made thanks to the introduction of successful profilactic and medical measures, the authorities say.
The health authorities now intends to renovate one of the regional key institutions on combating HIV and AIDS – the Centre on Prophylaxis and Combat of AIDS and Infectious Diseases.
Murmansk Oblast was in the 1990s among the regions in Northwest Russia with the strongest growth in HIV cases.
