Illegal fishing down 60 percent

Norwegian Minister of Fisheries Helga Pedersen says illegal fishing in the Barents Sea was reduced with 60 percent in the period 2005-2007. New international agreements will bring the violations further down, she maintains.

Talking in a press conference in the Polar Environmental Centre in Tromsø yesterday, Ms Pedersen said that her ministry’s fighting against illegal fishing in the Barents Sea has proven successful and that registered violations have been reduced with 60 percent in the period 2005-2007. The violations will be reduced further after the upcoming signing of an international agreement on port control measures and an agreement of certification of the fish origin, the minister said.
