Is Nord Stream a security challenge?
The projected Nord Stream pipeline in the Baltic Sea is not a security issue, former prime minister and currently Nord Stream adviser Paavo Lipponen maintains. He is supported by Finnish Minister of Defence Jyri Häkämies
The 1220 km long underwater pipeline planned laid across the Baltic Sea should not be considered a security issue, Lipponen argues. He is surprised that critics say that the pipeline is a security challenge, Yle reports. Lipponen is supported by Defence Minister Jyri Häkämies who says that Finland presupposes that other nations will not increase their military presence in the Gulf of Finland as a result of the pipeline. As a matter of fact, he rather believes that the pipeline will enhance Baltic security.
