Kandalaksha mayor stabbed to death
Nina Varlamova, the mayor of the town Kandalaksha in Russia’s northern Murmansk Region was stabbed to death on Tuesday evening. She was the third Russian mayor to be killed in less than a month.
- An unidentified person ran up to the mayor as she was leaving her house, stabbed her in the neck and fled the scene, website NEWSru reports.
Varlamova died on her way to hospital, but managed to whisper the name of the attacker before she died. The police has arrested a suspect, a local resident that had been working together with Varlamova in the Kandalaksha local administration in the 1990s. The police are investigating different motives for the murder.
Varlamova was elected as mayor of Kandalaksha in December 2007. Before this she worked as assistant to State Duma deputy Valentin Luntsevich. The former Mayor of Kandalaksha, Aleksandr Vikhoryev, was sentenced to two and a half year in prison for bribery in May 2007.
This is the third Russian mayor to be murdered in course of the last month. November 17 Magomed Barakhoyev, the mayor of Nazran, Ingushetia, was shot to death. The same happened to Vitaly Karayev, mayor of Vladikavkaz, North Ossieta, November 26.
