Kemijarvi ready to seize pulp mill

The town of Kemijärvi in Finnish Lapland is seeking permission from the state to seize the nearby Stora Enso pulp mill and all its equipment, YLE reports.

The city authorities argue that a national law actually allows local authorities to annex property needed to secure a town’s development. Owner of the mill, the Stora Enso company, has decided to close down the mill by the end of this month, and at the same time refuses to sell it. The closure of the plant is part of the company’s cost cutting plans. The closure of the plant is a devastating blow to the town of Kemijärvi, which is heavily dependent of the industrial activities.
