Kirkenes will become important transport hub

Kirkenes is becoming a stronghold for maritime operations and oil and gas activities in the High North and will play an important role as a hub between the Northern Maritime Corridor and the Northern Sea Route, Kirkenes port Director Eivind Gade Lundlie said at a Northern Sea Route Conference in Moscow on Tuesday.

- Due to our location, existing harbor facilities, services and the seafront industrial areas that are undergoing development, Kirkenes is becoming a stronghold for maritime operations and oil and gas activities in the region, Gade Lundlie said.

The port of Kirkenes will play an important role bringing international business to the region, and especially Kirkenes, he stated.

- Kirkenes is ready to work with the national industry, international companies and authorities in order to develop efficient and sustainable logistical solutions which will benefit the Northern Sea Route and the Maritime Corridor, he concluded.

The conference “The Northern Sea Route – revival strategy” gathered 150 participants from transport networks, shipping, forwarding, logistics and ports and was organized by the Ministry of Transport. The conference was headed by Minister of Transport Igor Levitin and President of the Northern Sea Route Arthur Chilingarov.

Also other interesting issues were presented. Chairman of Tscudi Shipping Company, Felix Tshudi spoke enthusiastic about opening the Northern Sea Route for bulk commodities from Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula to the far east.
