Kursk memorial meetings

Tomorrow Russia will mark the tenth anniversary for the death of the nuclear-powered submarine “Kursk”. Church services and meetings will be held all across Russia to commemorate the 118 sailors that died in the tragedy.

In Murmansk people will gather at the memorial for submariners who have died in peace time, the so-called Kursk memorial by the seamen’s church Our Saviour on the Water. Governor Dmitry Dmitriyenko, the newly elected Mayor of Murmansk Stepan Tananykin, representatives from the Northern Fleet and several other officials will be present, B-port.com reports.

The memorial is made of a part of the sail (tower) of “Kursk”.

In March 2009 this piece of submarine was found rusting at a scrap metal ground in Murmansk. The discovery created much indignation amongst Russians and Governor Dmitriyenko took personal responsibility for raising of a memorial over the sailors on Kursk. The memorial was completed to the nine year anniversary last year.

In St. Petersburg more than 200 relatives of the sailors on Kursk will gather for a requiem in the Naval St Nicolas Cathedral of the Epiphany, Regnum.ru writes. In the memorial meeting afterwards on the graveyard were 32 of the sailors are buried, military attaches from the US, Norway and Great Britain will take part.
