Landslide victory for Medvedev
As expected, Dmitrii Medvedev won a safe win in Sunday’s presidential elections. With all votes counted, Medvedev has got 70,23 percent support. His results from the subjects in Northwest Russia are slightly worse than national results.
Election turnover is 69,65 percent, Vesti.ru reports.
Communist leader Yevgenii Zyuganov got 17,76 of the votes, while leader of the Liberal Democrats, Vladimir Zhirinovskii got 9,37 percent support. The fourth contender, Mr. Bogdanov, got 1,29 percent of the votes.
In Murmansk Oblast, election results show 65,6 percent support for Medvedev, while 18,24 percent supported Gennadii Zuganov and 13,37 percent for Vladimir Zhirinovskii, Murmannews.ru reports. Election turnover was 68,06 percent.
In Arkhangelsk Oblast, results gave 66,98 percent for Dmitrii Medvedev, 18,77 percent for Zyuganov and 11,63 percent for Zhirinovskii. Voter turnout was 62,23 percent, Regnum reports.
In the Republic of Karelia, Dmitrii Medvedev secured 67,2 percent of the votes. Zyuganov had 17,3 percent and Zhirinovskii - 12,5 percent. The republic had among the lowest voter turnout in Russia with 55,7 percent
The election result both on national and regional level indicates a better result for Mr. Medvedev than for the United Russia Party in the November State Duma elections. The United Russia then won about 62 percent of the votes on national level. Northwest Russia was then among the worst areas for United Russia.
Yesterday’s presidential elections show that Northwest Russia has voted only slightly less for Mr. Medvedev than the rest of the country.
