Legislators in merging regions step up cooperation

As the merger process between the two regions proceeds, the legislative assemblies in Arkhangelsk Oblast and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug have agreed on how to cooperate.

The speakers of the Nenets AO and the Arkhangelsk legislative assemblies, Mr. Igor Koshin and Mr. Vitalii Fortygin have signed a cooperation agreement, which includes the exchange of legislative materials and information, as well as joint preparations of federal bills and the arrangement of regular meetings. The agreement comes as the two neighbouring regions are in the process of merging. A number of key powers were transferred from the Nenets AO to Arkhangelsk after 1 January this year, and recent speculations over the dismissal of the Nenets Governor Valerii Potapenko might indicate that the region might loose governor functions. However, as argued by members of the Nenets AO parliament, the new cooperation deal could also strengthen their role, as they will get the right to participate in the elaboration of regional laws in Arkhangelsk Oblast.
