Less crimes, more bribes

The number of serious crime cases in Murmansk Oblast in 2009 decreased by 20 percent, but corruption increased by more than 30 percent, Murmansk prosecutors told the press.

In a meeting with the press this week, Murmansk prosecutor Nikolai Konnov said that the number of serious crime cases in 2009 dropped 19,8 percent compared with 2008. However, in the same period the number of bribes increased strongly. Registered corruption cases in region in 2009 surged 30,8 percent, Mr. Konnov said.
