Little innovation in Murmansk and Arkhangelsk

The Komi Republic is best in the Russian part of the Barents Region.

The National Association of innovations and IT development released the Rating of innovation activity of the Russian regions in 2009.

The Rating is aimed at definition of the regions that achieved the best results in development of science and the sphere of innovations. The Rating divides all Russian regions into five groups according to criteria of the “European Innovation Scoreboard” providing the comparative assessment of the innovation performance of the EU Member States.

The Rating describes the level of development of environment for innovations, production and utilization of innovations and the legal environment.

The first group of the Russian leaders of innovation activity includes only two cities of federal significance: Moscow (index 563) and St. Petersburg (index 507).

The second group includes the regions with “high innovation activity” and includes 14 regions with index between 201 and 289. Komi Republic belongs to this group with index 206.

The third group of the regions with “medium level of innovation activity includes 24 Russian regions with index from 50 to 180. Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions are placed in the fourth group of regions with “low innovation activity” with index 33 and 27 correspondingly.

Karelia Republic is placed in the lower group of the lagging regions with index 8.

The Russian National Association of innovations and IT development was established in 2006 in the frames of Presidential program of innovations support . Today this is one of the biggest Russian public organization which unites over 1400 innovation companies and creative groups.
