Medvedev and Halonen discuss schedule of contacts for 2010

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had a telephone conversation with his Finnish counterpart Tarja Halonen on Monday to discuss a schedule of contacts for 2010 when the two countries mark the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

During the conversation, Medvedev and Halonen agreed that the next year would be not less intensive than the outgoing year, ITAR-TASS reports.

- The presidents discussed key results of the outgoing year. They noted that 2009 was a very intensive year, which gave a powerful impulse to the development of Russian-Finnish relations in all fields, the Russian President’s press service reported.

The parties noted that the development of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries, including on the most important Nord Stream gas pipeline project deserves high praise.

President Halonen met with Medvedev in Sochi, Russia, in August. The Nord Stream pipeline was among the top agenda issues in that meeting, as BarentsObserver reported. The Finnish government granted permits to Nord Stream gas pipe to utilize their exclusive economic zones in November.

President Medvedev was on a official visit to Helsinki in April, only days after Finland adopted its new Russia action plan with guidelines for the management of the Finland’s further relations with Russia.
