Medvedev: Russia needs to speed up modernization of its naval fleet

Russia developed a serious lag in shipbuilding in the 1990s and must deal with it as soon as possible, President Dmitry Medvedev said on Tuesday. The country plans to adopt an integrated military and civilian shipbuilding program.

Medvedev yesterday visited Severodvinsk outside Arkhangelsk in connection with the launch of Russia’s newest nuclear powered attack submarine, the “Severodvinsk”.

Medvedev also mentioned the increasing fight for Arctic resources as a reason for Russia’s need to boost shipbuilding.
