Medvedev wants visa-free travel with Finland

Solutions should be found for cross-border travel restrictions, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in Helsinki yesterday. He underlined that Russia is ready for the introduction of visa-free travel with Finland.

-Russia is ready to take all necessary measures for the introduction of visa-free travel with Finland, Medvedev said in Helsinki yesterday, RIA Novosti reports. –We are ready to act, he underlined, adding that the issue now is up to the EU.

In yesterday’s meeting with Finland’s Tarja Halonen, President Medvedev admitted that he himself had experienced troublesome cross-border travel. “About ten years ago I crossed the border between Russia and Finland as an ordinary citizen myself, and it was not easy, or pleasant, as it took a long time”, Medvedev conceded, adding that “solutions should be sought for the challenges”, Yle reports.

In 2008, Finland issued about 750,000 visas to Russians.
