Mining and construction did best in Murmansk

In the period January-September, big and medium-sized companies in Murmansk Oblast had total revenues of 33.5 billion RUB. That is almost 10 percent more than in the same period in 2007.

Regional industries in Murmansk Oblast might be facing harder times as the financial crisis gives lower demands and dropping raw material prices. The ecnomic figures for 2008 are still likely to be positive. According to figures from the Murmansk statistical authority, Murmanstat, the regional companies the first nine months of the year generated 9,9 percent more year-on-year from 2007. The main part of the regional revenues were generated by mining companies (+330%), as well as by the construction industry (+290%). Also regional fish producers and transport companies had a major growth, respectively 90 percent and 40 percent, Murman.ru reports. Major deficits were registered in the metallurgy industry (minus 63,2%) as well as in retail industry (minus 16,6%). About 34 percent of the regional big and medium-sized companies in the period ran with deficits. Most of the deficit companies were are operating in the field of energy production and supply, as well as gas and water supply.
