Ministry of Defense: Fisheries are disturbing navy exercises
According to the Russian navy, fishermen are disturbing them in conducting exercises in the Barents Sea. On the other hand, the fisheries sector claims to lose money since navy exercises often coincide with the best fishing seasons.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has sent the State Duma a bill on changes in the law on fisheries, hoping to establish by law the military’s right to restrict fishing in certain areas, GTRK Murman reports.
According to General Director in the Union of Fishery Managers in the North Vasily Nikitin, Murmansk fishermen lose a lot of money because of navy exercises. This year the best areas for fishing capelin were closed 22 days of the six weeks the capelin season lasted. - We lost about 5-6 tons of capelin because we had to conduct fishing in less productive areas, he says.
The fisheries sector is certain that their views will be taking into account when the bill is discussed in the State Duma. According to Russian law, the Federal Fishery Agency is one of the main organs with the right to impose restrictions on fishing, according to GTRK Murman.
