More money to Svalbard

The Norwegian Government plans to increase allocations to Svalbard with 10.3 million NOK. Most of the money goes to the Governor’s office.

In the budget proposal for 2010, the Norwegian Government suggests to spend 7.4 million NOK on the Governor of Svalbard, Svalbardposten reports. The money will be used at strengthening the Governor’s police and emergency services and are aimed at clarifying the Governor’s role as the Government’s highest representative on the archipelago.

One additional police position will be established and the field inspector service will be prolonged.

The rest of the allocations to Svalbard will be channeled into the school and kindergarten sector in Longyearbyen.
