More Russians go to work in Norway

In the course of the last five years, a total of 10,000 Russians, most of them from Murmansk Oblast, have been employed in Norway, the labour union council of Murmansk confirms. In the years to come, the numbers will only increase, the council deputy says

According to council representative, Mr. Yuri Savakov, most of the Russians work within the field of medicine, fish processing and oil and gas.

-Movements of labour across the borders will only increase in the years to come, Mr. Savakov underlines to B-port.com. The reason is the globalization of the economy, requiring free movements of goods, services and labour force across the borders, he adds.

From the Norwegian side, the authorities have expressed major interest in attracting more Russian workers. A government report presented in Kirkenes in April this year proposes to significantly open up for Russian work immigration.

According to official figures from Statistics Norway, a total of 11,350 people in Norway are either born in Russia or have Russian parents. One third of these come from Chechnya.
