More Russians move to the cities

By year 2025, 96 percent of the population in Russia will live in cities, a UN report predicts. Meanwhile, the population will drop to below 130 million.

The report “World Urbanization Prospects: The 2007 Revision Population Database” indicate that the urbanization of Russian will continue with major pace until 2025, when about 96 percent of the population will live in cities, Vedomosti reports.

After 2025, the urbanization trend will weaken and by 2050 the number of city dwellers will decrease to 88,7 percent of the population, the report reads.

The rapid movement of people from the countryside to the cities could leave major land areas depopulated, subsequently also creating possible economic problems for the country.
