More Russians than accounted for
The 2010 Russian population census might reveal that the population is much larger than accounted for. A “rehearsal” census in three Russian regions in October showed that two percent more people were living in these areas than officially registered.
In a national population census six years 1,8 million unregistered persons were found. Experts explain this phenomenon by the fact that Russia is a country attractive to immigrants. Most unregistered citizens in the 2002 census were found in Moscow, Belgorod Oblast and in the Caucasus. On the other hand, slightly less people than expected lived in the Northern regions.
