Most Internet users in Northwest Russia
In only one year, the number of Russian Internet users has boomed from 25 to 33 percent of the population. The density of users is highest in Northwest Russia.
According to the Russian Public Opinion Poll, a total of 38 percent of the adult population in Northwest Russia regularly use the Internet. That is the highest density of users in all of Russia, newspaper Vedomosti reports.
Despite the economic crisis, the number of Internet users in 2009 increased rapidly. While one of four adult Russians in 2009 regularly used the Internet, one of three now are web online. In the same period, also the speed of the net in the country’s 21 biggest cities increased substantially from 410 kb/s to 1100 kb/s, a study from Internet Search provider Yandex shows.
The average monthly fee for Internet use in Russia is 500-600 RUB. The prices are highest in the Far East and lowest in Moscow.
The cities with the biggest density of users are St Petersburg and Moscow with respectively 57 and 59 percent of the population, Vedomosti reports.
