MPs develop strategy for northern policy

The first Northern Dimension Parliamentary Forum takes place in Brussels this week bringing together parliamentarians from the EU, Russia, Norway and Iceland.

200 members of from the parliaments (MPs) met in the European Parliament today with the aim of strengthen the cooperation between the different EU institutions, EU member states and the non-EU member states in northern Europe; Russia, Norway and Iceland, reports the Swedish newsdesk.

The Northern Dimension was a Finnish initiative and addresses regional challenges in the far north. Environmental problems, health challenges and cooperation with Russia are two main items for EUs Northern Dimension.

The main theme at the Forum today and Thursday will be development of a policy for the Northern Dimension in the Baltic Sea Region and the Arctic Region. The Forum wishes to co-ordinate strategy with the various parliamentary bodies from the area covered.

Also the Nordic Council, the cooperative instrument for Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland, has a delegation participating at the Northern Dimension Parliamentary Forum in Brussels, reports Norden.org.
