Municipalities face financial crisis

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen says he expects that the financial crisis soon will send shock waves over the country’s municipalities.

The opposition is calling for an immediate support package to help stagger negative consequences on municipal financing. The Christian Democrats said municipal workers, families, the ill and the elderly will pay the ultimate price for the squeeze on municipal financing as cash-strapped municipalities become forced to cut back on services, Yle News reports. While Vanhanen says the needs of different municipalities must be thoroughly evaluated before any decision on support packages is made, the opposition maintains there is little time to lose, the Finnish broadcaster reports.
