NEFCO's environmental investments in Barents

Despite excellent cross-border cooperation between the Nordic countries and the Russian Barents region, some serious environmental concerns still remain.

In 2003, the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation, NEFCO, co-financed a study which identified a number of so called environmental hot spots in the Russian part of the Barents region. The emissions of sulphur oxide and heavy metals from smelters in the Kola Peninsula have been one of the main subjects of international environmental cooperation in the Barents Region.

NEFCO’s study identified the smelters in Nikel and Zaployarnyi as well as the poor wastewater treatment in Murmansk as some of the worst hot spots in the Barents Region.

This video shows what NEFCO is doing in order to address the environmental challenges at hand.
