New abbot at Solovki

Archimandrite Porfiry is appointed new abbot of the Solovoki monastery in the White Sea.

He comes from the position as former treasurer of the Holy Trinity-St.Segius Lavra, one of Russia’s most important Russian monasteries and the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church, reports Pravoslavie.ru.

Archimandrite Porfiry also takes over the position as director of the museum on the island, earlier headed by Mikhail Lopatkin. Mr. Lopatkin won the election campaign and is now the political head of the local settlement on Solovki.

Earlier, it was several disputes between the church, the museum and the local settlement on Solovki, but this disputes are most likely over now, as the new abbot of the monastery also is the director of the museum.
