New conscripts ready for service in navy

Once a year the 200 conscripts aboard the Northern Fleet’s flagship “Petr Veliky” are replaced. Before becoming real sailors in the Russian Navy, they need to take an oath to Russia.

TV-21 in Murmansk has visited the nuclear-powered battle cruiser to see how the conscripts live onboard.

Pyotr Veliky” has a displacement of between 24,000 and 26,000 tons, and a speed of up to 31 knots (almost 57 km/h). The ship is 251 meters in length and has a crew of nearly 800 sailors.

The ship’s main weapons include 20 SS-N-19 Shipwreck missiles, designed to engage large surface targets.

Russia plans to modernize three other, laid-up Kirov class missile cruisers, as reported by BarentsObserver.
