New Finnish radars to watch Russia

The Finnish Air Force is investing 200 million EUR in its new radar system. The new radars will help the Air Force monitor its national airspace, the country’s armed forces say.

According to Yle, the new radar equipment will have a value of 200 million EUR and be in operation “in the next decade”. The country’s current radar system is from the 1970s and is unable to give a sufficiently accurate picture of movements in Finnish air space. The new radars will be able to transmit data directly to the country’s Hornet fighters. Over the last years, there has been several cases of Finnish air space violations by Russian air crafts. The new equipment comes in a period with a strong increase in Russian air force training in the High North.
