New Head of Administration in Pechenga

The municipality of Pechenga, located on the border to Norway and Finland, has finally a new political leader after nearly three months of temporary rule.

Vladimir Ogiyenko, 55, was elected by a majority of the municipality council to Head of the municipality administration, TV21 reports. Twelve of the 13 council members voted for Ogiyenko.

Pechenga has been under the leadership of an acting mayor since the former Head of the administration Valetin Tchizhevsky died in a car accident in early August. His predecessor, Nadezhda Shelkovnikova, died in June after only some two months in the position, as BarentsObserver reported.

Shelkovnikova was the last person to be elected as mayor in Pechenga. The municipal council has adopted a law that resulted in the abolishment of direct mayoral elections.

Ogiyenko is a member of the program committee of Russia’s ruling party United Russia’s regional branch in Murmansk Oblast.
