New Mayor of Murmansk
The Murmansk City Council has elected Stepan Tananykin as the city’s new Mayor. The government of Murmansk will now be spit in two – one political and one administrational part.
Stepan Tananykin received 18 votes while Head of the City Council Aleksey Veller, who resigned at yesterday’s council meeting, received 9 votes.
The meeting in the city council where the members were to elect the new mayor ended with a sensation, Komsomolskaya Pravda writes. According to the newspaper, everybody believed that Aleksey Veller, Head of the council, would become the new mayor.
The meeting started with the members accepting Aleksey Veller’s letter of resignation. This was the final step in the dispute between the City Council and the former mayor, Sergey Subbotin, who was dismissed by the council in June.
As BarentsObserver reported, Murmansk Oblast Governor Dmitry Dmitriyenko suggested that if Subbotin had to leave his post, then Veller should do the same, in order to level the situation.
Murmansk will now have to leaders, according to a law regulation the council members passed at the meeting yesterday. The mayor will be charge of the political power in the town, while a so-called city manager will deal with administration and business related issues. The city manager will be appointed later.
Stepan Tananykin, 47, comes from the position as Director of the company ORKO-invest. He has been a member of the City Council for two periods.
