New Nenets governor inaugurated

The legislative assembly in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug today approved Igor Fyodorov as the region’s new governor. The new regional leader comes from the post as deputy governor in the neighboring Arkhangelsk Oblast.

With 14 votes against one, the regional parliament in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug today approved Igor Fyodorov as new governor, Regnum reports. He was nominated to the post by President Medvedev after the 16 February dismissal of former governor Valery Potapenko.

Mr. Fyodorov comes from the post as Arkhangelsk deputy governor on energy, fuel and housing affairs.

-The Nenets Okrug is an independent and distinct region, the governor told the press after arriving to the regional capital of Naryan-Mar. He maintained that he will keep most of the administration of former governor Potapenko. A new post as first deputy governor on financial issues will be established, as well as an adviser position on security issues, a press release from the regional administration reads.

The new governor also intends to initiate a revision of the financial management of the former governor Potapenko. It is believed that a main reason for the dismissal of Potapenko is failed management of the unfolding financial crisis.

Leaving the region, Mr. Potapenko highlighted that he will now seek new engagement “whereever the United Russia Party, President Medvedev of Premier Putin will will want”. At the same time, he underlined that he forever will remain a patriot of the Nenets AO.

Potapenko has worked as Nenets Governor since the summer of 2006.
