New political leader in Pechenga

The Municipality Council in Pechenga, located on the border to Norway and Finland, last week elected a temporary mayor until a town manager can be appointed.

Irina Neverova, 45, was elected Acting Mayor of the Pechenga municipality on August 20, B-port.com writes. She is member of Russia’s ruling party United Russia.

As BarentsObserver reported, the previous two mayors of Pechenga died in course of the last three months. Nadezhda Shelkovnikova, who won the mayoral elections in the municipality in April this year, died – probably form cancer – in June. Her post was taken over by her deputy, Valentin Tchizhevsky. He died in a traffic accident in early August.

The municipal council is now preparing a legislative amendment which will result in the abolishment of direct mayoral elections and introduce a system of appointed “town managers”.
