New power plant for Murmansk Oblast

Leading electricity generator in Northwest Russia, the TGK-1 company, intends to complete the first part of a new thermal power plant in Murmansk by year 2011.

The new power plant will, the Murmansk TEC-2, cost up to 35 billion RUB (950 million EUR) and serve the city of Murmansk and the nearby Kola settlement. According to Valerii Rodin, head of the Territorial Generating Company (TGK-1), the power plant will in the initial period run on coal from Vorkuta or the Kuznetsk region. When the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea comes into production, the power plant will fuelled by natural gas. The new plant will help Murmansk diversify its use of fuels.
