Nine candidates to post as Mayor of Murmansk

The nomination of candidates to the post as Mayor of Murmansk is now closed. Nine persons will be competing in the elections on March 1.

Speaker in the Murmansk regional parliament, Yevgeny Nikora, believes that the two strongest candidates to the post are current mayor Mikhail Savchenko from United Russia and Gennady Stepakhno from the Communist Party.

Nikora believes the current situation will be a challenge for the candidates B-port reports:

- It is long since Russia and Murmansk Oblast in particular has held elections in difficult times as these, in an atmosphere of anxious anticipation. Part of the population will be highly skeptical towards any politician advancing their candidacy in local elections, Nikora said.

The Murmansk Oblast regional party branch of United Russia have advanced and supported in all 116 candidates in the municipal elections to municipal administrations, which also take place on March 1. This makes United Russia the biggest party in the elections. On second place comes the Liberal Democratic Party with 49 candidates. 307 candidates are independent.
