Norilsk Nickel best Russian company

Norilsk Nickel has won a title as best Russian company within the metallurgy sector in 2009 in a competition organized by Russian Business Consulting and the Russian government.

The award was received by General Director Oleg Pivovarchuk in Moscow on Firday, the company’s web site reads.

The purpose of the annual competition “Best Russian Company of the year” is to increase competitiveness of the Russian business and to attraction attention from the public and the world business community to leading domestic companies which activity answers international standards.

Norilsk Nickel operates mines and smelters in Norilsk in Siberia. On the Kola Peninsula the company has mines in Zapolyarny and a nickel smelting plant in Nikel near the border to Norway. Also, in Monchegorsk, south of Murmansk, the company operates a nickel and copper smelter.

The company was recently excluded from the Norwegian Government Pension Fund because of the environmental damages the company’s factories are afflicting clashes with the fund’s guidelines, as reported by BarentsObserver.
