Norway might ban fishing on threatened stocks

The Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management believes all fishing of coastal cod, halibut, haddock and eel should be banned in order to prevent the total extinction of the species.

The recommendation is supported by member of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), Mr. Reidar Toresen. He says to NRK that the stocks of coast cod have been reduced by 75 percent only over the last 10 years. Meanwhile, the Norwegian fish industry is sceptical to the figures from the researchers. Representatives of the Norwegian Fishery Association claim that the stocks of coastal cod have not been reduced as described by the researchers. The fishery organisation argues that it rather is the migration patterns of the cod stocks which have changed.
