Norway, Russia joining forces in fight against tax offenders

Norwegian and Russian tax authorities join forces in the fight against tax evasion and economic crime.

Cross-border activity between Norway and Russia is increasing. Russian citizens work in Norway and do their shopping in Norway and the Russian market is attractive for more and more Norwegian companies.

Norwegian and Russian tax authorities are now establishing a new channel for control and cooperation to fight tax evasion and other border-crossing crime, TV2 reports. Representatives from the two countries met in Tromsø, Northern Norway last week to discuss further actions.

Simultaneous controls are among the measures that will be taken, says Fredrik Aksnes, director in the Norwegian Tax Inspectorate.

The tax contol cooperation not only aims at revealing tax evasion, but also establishing systems that will ensure the taxpayers’ right to an accurate taxation. Russian authorities use Norway as a model for what kind of tax system they want to have, says Ilya Oksenberg, advisor in the Russian Federal Tax Authorities:

- The Norwegian tax system had developed over a long period while Russia is only in the initial phase. Norwegian experience is therefore of great interest to us.
