Norwegian illegal fishing increasing
In one year the number of reported cases of illegal fishing has doubled in northern Norway. Better controls of the vessels are part of the explanation.
The Directorate of Fisheries in the northern Norwegian county of Nordland has planned their vessel controls better over the last year. This has resulted in an increased number of reports on illegal fishing. In 2007 there were 23 reports. The number this year will probably be twice as big, according to NRK.
Janne Andersen in the Directorate of Fisheries says there are two types of illegal fishing. Either the vessels register the catch improperly or the catch is not registered at all. And the illegal fishing is taking place with all kinds of fishing vessels, Andersen confirms.
