Old Arctic ice vanishing

The layers of old ice in the Arctic are vanishing despite this year’s severe cold in the area, studies from NASA show.

The cold winter in the Arctic has created more new ice. However, the old ice layers continue to vanish. While the old ice cap last year constituted about 40 percent of the Arctic ice, the amount is now only 30 percent, the NASA satellite pictures show. It is the old ice layers, which constitute the most solid part of the Arctic. The new ice created this year will melt quickly when meeting warmer waters.
