Old ladies became gold millionaires

Two elderly women last summer found what appears to be Sweden’s largest gold and zink ore. Now the two women have become millionaires after selling the rights to develop the metals to a Canadian mining company.

The two women from northern Sweden, Harriet Svensson and Siv Wiik, became national celebrities in their home country when they literally hit a gold mine last summer. They both earn their living as chefs at a local restaurant. Now they have sold the rights to develop the deposits to the Canadian company Hansa Resources for 21 million SEK (2.3 million EUR), according to Swedish newspaper Dagens Industri.

More than twenty mining companies from all over the world were interested in developing the mine. Their main reason for choosing the Canadians is that they were sensitive and humble from the start of the negotiations. The two ladies keep a 20 percent cut of the project, which they can sell at any time.

Harriet Svensson says that the most important for them is not the money they earn, but the effect the mining activity will have for the local community and the increasing amount of available jobs.
