Opposition leader will appeal to international court
Larisa Bazanova, the opposition leader who claims that the May 25 city mayor’s elections in Arkhangelsk were rigged, intends to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.
-It is not interesting whether Bazanova becomes mayor or not – we work for the rule of law in the country, including the election laws, lawyer Mansur Bekarov says to Rosbaltnord.ru. He now confirms that the case will be taken to a higher Russian court, whereupon it might sent to the European Court of Human Rights, an institution established by the Council of Europe. Larisa Bazanova was first declared the winner of the May elections. After a recount demanded by acting mayor Viktor Pavlenko, the election result was however altered in favour of Mr. Pavlenko. Larisa Bazanova claims she has firm evidence of the falsification of the recount. Ms Bazanova lost the court case, as well as her appeal, against the local city election commission.
