Paralympics gold to Komi
Maria Iovleva (20) from Syktyvkar in the Komi Republic won gold and silver in the Vancouver Winter Paralympics ending this weekend.
Russia suffered its worst-ever Winter Olympics, but did very good in the following Paralympics in Vancouver. The Russian Paralympics team got 38 medals, including 12 gold, reports The Moscow Times.
Maria Iovleva, a native of the Barents Region won gold in cross-country skiing and silver in sitting biathlon. Iovleva comes from Syktyvkar, the capital of Komi, the easternmost member-region in Barents.
All gold medal winners get a cash prize of 100.000 Euro from the Russian government.
