Planning deep-water port in Arkhangelsk
Arkhangelsk is planning to build a deep-water port with an annual capacity of 28 million tons of cargo.
Arkhangelsk is already a major transport hub in the Arctic and the main base for supplies to oil and gas projects in the Arctic and Siberia. The new deep-water port will consolidate an optimal design for transport and logistics between Russia’s economic partners in Europe, the U.S. and Asia, the Arkhangelsk administration’s web site reads.
The press release does not name a particular date for start of the construction, but it has earlier been said that work will begin in 2011.
Arkhangelsk Port is the main base for transportation of pipes for the underwater pipeline that is being built across the Baydaratskaya Bay on the Yamal peninsula. The underwater pipeline is part of the 1100 km long Bovanenkovo-Ukhta pipeline, which will link the huge Bovanenkovo gas field with the Russian west-bound pipeline grid.
