Pomors demand continued White Sea seal hunting
The community of Pomors in Arkhangelsk is trying to counteract the decision to ban seal hunting in the White Sea.
Arkhangelsk Deputy Governor Vladimir Voyko last week announced the ban on seal hunting in the area, arguing that the seal stocks are in danger. Mr. Voiko also heads the Arkhangelsk commission on Emergency Situations.
-The ban will pose a serious threat to the centuries-old Pomor fishing tradition. The authorities do not help the indigenous population in Pomor villages, they instead try to please ecologists. What is happening now, is that they are literally strangling the Pomors, leader of the local Pomor community, Mr. Pavel Osipov, says.
