Prohibitive duty on salmon and trout

The Russian Fishery Agency (Rosrybolovstvo) is preparing a proposition to the Russian government on prohibitive duty on import of fish products that are being produced by domestic industry. Removal of import duty and VAT rate on vessels built or modernized abroad is also under consideration.

This was said by Head of the Fishery Agency, Andrey Krainy, at a roundtable discussion in Moscow on supply, wholesale and retail trade of fish products, news web site B-port reports, referring to Interfax.

- This primarily concerns capelin, herring, salmon and trout. Import of these species makes domestic production less competitive, Mr. Krainy said.

According to the federal development strategy for the fishery industry, the share of domestic production in consumption will increase from today’s 67 percent to 85 percent within 2020.

The Fishery Agency is also planning to remove import duty and VAT rate on fishing and transport vessels built or modernized abroad. Of 120 Russian vessels built or modernized abroad, 70 are registered in Murmansk. Should these vessels return to Murmansk port, Murmansk Oblast could see a 2 billion RUB increase in fish production and a 170 million RUB increase in budget revenues.
