Road construction halted in Nenets tundra

The construction of the road between Naryan-Mar and Arkhangelsk will be halted on uncertain time following the financial crisis, regional authorities confirm. Also the ongoing construction of the road leading to the neighboring Komi Republic is frozen.

Sergey Popov, Deputy Director of the Arkhangelskavtodor Road Agency confirms to Regnum that both road projects are halted because of the lack of finances. The construction the road from Arkhangelsk to Naryan-Mar has not been started yet. That made it easy to postpone that project. As for the road Naryan-Mar – Usinsk, 140 million RUB were invested in construction last year (40 million from Arkhangelsk Oblast budget and 100 million from federal budget). That construction will now also be suspended, said Popov. He did not specify how long the projects will be postponed. -We do not know how long the crisis will last, he said. Currently, the far northern Nenets Autonomous Okrug has no roads linking the region with the neighboring federal subjects. Only in wintertime, ice roads bring vehicles with personnel and equipment in and out of the region.
