Rosneft’s first arctic tanker in operation

Russian oil major Rosneft has put its first ice-protected tanker for operations in the Barents Sea into service. The 30,000 ton vessel named “Arkhangelsk” will ship oil from the Timan-Pechora province to Murmansk.

Russian Oil Company Rosneft informs in a press release that on Desember 10, the new tanker “Arkhangelsk” received its first cargo of oil at the Arkhangelsk oil terminal and left for the “Belokamenka” floating oil terminal outside Murmansk.

The vessel is built at the Factorias Vulcano shipyard in the town of Vigo, Spain. The tanker is designed to navigate in extreme ice conditions of Arctic seas with more than one meter thick ice.

The 176 meter long and 30 meter wide tanker carries 25 thousand tonnes of oil, and will be able to deliver more than 1,2 million tonnes annually to the “Belokamenka” terminal. “Arkhangelsk” is the first vessel built in the framework of Rosneft’s tanker fleet program. Another two tankers are expected to be put afloat in 2009.
