Royal visitor in Borderland

Her Royal Highness Queen Sonja of Norway has spent nearly a week in Sør-Varanger on the border to Russia. Together with Olympic Champion Vegard Ulvang she skied nearly 100 kilometers.

The Queen was in Sør-Varanger on a private holiday. Together with six friends and security personnel she skied the nearly 100 kilometers long track from Munkefjord through Pasvik to the Three-country border cairn where Norway meets Finland and Russia, newspaper Finnmarken reports.

The team stayed in private cabins and austere huts along the way.

At a press conference before leaving Sør-Varanger, Queen Sonja said that she have dreamt about skiing in Finnmark for a long time.

Vegard Ulvang won three gold medals in the Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, in 1992. He is born in Kirkenes, Sør-Varanger.
